Indiana Truck Dispatch: Steel, the Toll Road and I-65

Indiana truck dispatch means steel from the northwest, distribution out of Indianapolis and more outbound freight than inbound, which keeps reloads close. We book Indiana loads remotely for a flat 6% or 8% of weekly gross.

Figures and rules checked October 29, 2026

Indiana's state motto is "The Crossroads of America," and for truckers it's literal. Interstates 64, 65, 69, 70, 74, 80, 90 and 94 all run through it. Most of the freight moving between Chicago and the East, and between the Great Lakes and the South, passes through Indiana on the way.

Indiana is also a strong origin state, not just a pass-through. About 125 million tons left Indiana by truck for other states in 2022, against about 96 million coming in. That's one of the best outbound-to-inbound balances among the big Midwest states, and it means loads are usually waiting for trucks that deliver there.

What Indiana ships by truck

By FAF6 truck tons originating in Indiana in 2022, the largest groups were cereal grains (about 38 million tons, mostly in grain trailers), then the freight that fits our equipment:

  • Base metals like steel and aluminum: about 32 million tons, much of it from northwest Indiana mills. That's a big flatbed market.
  • Nonmetal mineral products: about 27 million tons.
  • Mixed freight from distribution centers: about 18 million tons.
  • Animal feed and other foodstuffs: about 18 and 16 million tons.

Indiana trucks deliver most to Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. The biggest senders back are Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Wisconsin. Much of that is the short-haul steel and auto parts network that ties the Great Lakes states together.

Running and reloading in Indiana

  • Indianapolis is the reload hub. Its distribution centers ship in every direction, and it's within a day of Chicago, Columbus, Louisville, Cincinnati and St. Louis. Our Indianapolis truck dispatch page covers it in detail.
  • Northwest Indiana works with Chicago. Treat Gary, Hammond and Merrillville as part of the Chicago market for reloads, and watch for the heavy traffic on I-80/94.
  • Steel moves short. Coils and plate from northwest Indiana often go to processors and plants a few hundred miles away. Good for flatbedders who want to stay regional.
  • Elkhart is seasonal. The RV industry ships most heavily in spring and summer, and slows in winter. Some of that freight is drive-away or specialized, but parts and components move in vans.

Indiana rules and costs to know

  • The Indiana Toll Road. I-80/90 across northern Indiana is a 157-mile toll road from the Illinois line to Ohio. Trucks pay by class, and a full-length trip for a five-axle truck costs many times what a car pays. Check the current toll rates and ask whether the broker covers tolls.
  • Fuel tax. Indiana's diesel rate is 63 cents a gallon on the IFTA matrix for the 4th quarter of 2026, one of the higher rates in the country. Because IFTA taxes the miles you drive in each state, buying cheaper fuel elsewhere doesn't lower the tax on your Indiana miles. The IFTA calculator shows how it works.
  • Intrastate rules. Indiana's Department of Revenue requires a state certificate for intrastate passenger and household goods carriers. Its Motor Carrier Services division handles IRP, IFTA and other filings, so check with them if you'll run Indiana-only loads.
  • Winter. Lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan hits I-80/94 and the Toll Road in northwest Indiana hard. The rest of the state gets snow and ice storms that close interchanges for hours, not days.

Indiana's freight year

  • Spring: Planting season and RV shipping start. Construction lifts flatbed demand.
  • Summer: RV and trailer shipments peak in the north. Auto plants may take short shutdowns.
  • Fall: Harvest fills rural roads, and the holiday retail push runs through Indianapolis distribution centers.
  • Winter: Steady steel and distribution freight, with weather delays in the northwest.

A steel flatbed week from northwest Indiana

Here's how a dispatcher might plan a week for a flatbed based in northwest Indiana, built around steel and the short runs between Great Lakes plants.

DayLoadAbout
MondaySteel coils from a Burns Harbor area mill to a Detroit area processor on I-94250 miles
TuesdayMachinery from the Toledo area to Indianapolis on I-75 and I-69220 miles
WednesdayBuilding materials from Indianapolis to Louisville on I-65115 miles
ThursdayStructural steel from Louisville to the Gary area on I-65290 miles
FridayLocal steel moves or home time

An example of how a week can be planned, not a promise of loads, rates or miles. Distances are rounded.

Before each steel load, the driver checks the tiedown count against the coil rules. Our tiedown calculator handles the general count, and the commodity rules add more for coils.

Indiana checklist: the Toll Road, steel and lake snow

  • Check whether the Toll Road is on the route and whether tolls are covered.
  • On steel loads from northwest Indiana, confirm your securement gear and the coil rules before you arrive.
  • Treat Gary and Hammond deliveries as Chicago-market loads for reloads, and plan for I-80/94 traffic.
  • In winter, add time for lake-effect snow in northwest Indiana.
  • Remember that IFTA taxes your Indiana miles at Indiana's rate, wherever you buy fuel.

How we dispatch Indiana

Northwest Indiana runs as part of the Chicago market, and your dispatcher treats it that way for reloads. Steel loads are matched to your securement gear, and Toll Road costs and Indiana's high fuel tax are counted before you say yes.

Same terms in every state. We work online and are registered in New York. There's no local office, so your dispatcher works with you by phone, text and email.

  • A flat 6% of weekly gross for dry van, reefer, flatbed and power only, and 8% for box truck and hotshot
  • No fee on loads picked up in your first 3 days
  • No upfront or setup fees and no long-term contract
  • Setup within about 24 hours of getting your documents

Here's how our fee works and what you need to get set up.

Freight tonnage on this page comes from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics Freight Analysis Framework (FAF6, base year 2022).

When a steel load and a van load are close, compare them with the load profit calculator.
