Box Truck Dispatch Service, CDL and Non-CDL

Our box truck dispatch service books freight for CDL and non-CDL box trucks up to 26 ft across the lower 48, negotiates every rate and handles the paperwork, for a flat 8% of weekly gross.

What our box truck dispatchers handle

A box truck is the most practical way to run your own trucking business without a tractor-trailer. The challenge is finding steady broker freight that fits a 16 to 26 foot box, at rates that cover your costs. That's what your box truck dispatcher works on every day.

  • Load sourcing for palletized freight, retail distribution and other box truck loads that fit your size, weight limit and liftgate (if you have one).
  • Rate negotiation. Box truck rates swing a lot by distance and urgency, so we quote what the load is worth, not what the first broker offers.
  • Route planning around your home base, so local and regional runs connect instead of leaving you empty.
  • Broker vetting before every booking.
  • Paperwork from broker setup packets to invoices in your name.
  • Detention and TONU recovered from the broker when you're held or a load cancels.

Do you need an MC, a USDOT number or a CDL for a box truck?

This is the first question most new box truck owners ask, and the answers depend on your truck's weight rating and where you haul. Here's the short version for a box truck hauling other people's freight for pay.

RequirementWhen it applies
CDLNot needed if the truck is rated under 26,001 lbs GVWR, unless you haul hazmat that requires placards. Many 26 foot non-CDL box trucks are rated just under the line.
MC number (operating authority)Needed to haul regulated freight for hire across state lines, in your own name. See FMCSA's page on getting operating authority.
USDOT numberNeeded for interstate commerce in a vehicle rated over 10,000 lbs GVWR.
DOT medical cardNeeded to drive a commercial vehicle over 10,000 lbs GVWR across state lines.
Liability insuranceAt least $750,000 for a truck rated 10,001 lbs or more hauling general freight. Many brokers ask for $1,000,000.
Cargo insuranceNot a federal requirement for general freight, but almost every broker requires it before they'll give you a load.

The CDL line for a single truck is set in 49 CFR 383.91: a "heavy straight vehicle" rated 26,001 lbs or more needs a Class B CDL.

If the truck actually weighs more than its rating on the scale, the higher weight counts, and placarded hazmat needs a CDL at any weight. Rules for hauling only inside one state vary by state, so check with your state if you won't cross state lines.

What we book, and what we don't

We book broker freight for box trucks: palletized loads, retail and distribution freight, and expedited runs that fit your size. We don't book Amazon Relay or other platform loads, because broker freight lets your dispatcher negotiate the rate and plan your week.

We dispatch box trucks up to 26 feet, CDL and non-CDL. If your truck has a liftgate, pallet jack or straps and e-track, tell us. It opens up loads that other box trucks can't take.

Why the box truck fee is 8%

Box truck loads pay less per load than a full tractor-trailer, so your dispatcher books more of them each week to keep you moving. More loads means more calls, more setup packets and more paperwork for the same weekly revenue. The 8% covers that work. It's still one flat percentage, with nothing upfront and no monthly fees.

Where box truck freight is strongest

Box trucks do best in dense metros, where a 53-foot trailer is hard to place. Strong markets include:

  • New York: deliveries into New York City and Long Island.
  • Florida: busy local work in Miami, Orlando and Tampa, where routes stay inside the state.
  • Colorado: metro deliveries up and down the Front Range.
  • Maryland: deliveries in the Baltimore and Washington metros.

How box truck dispatch works with us

  1. Send your docs. MC authority, insurance certificate, W-9, voided check and the signed dispatch agreement.
  2. Get matched. We learn your box size, weight rating, liftgate and service area.
  3. Loads get booked. We book loads that fit your box size and service area, and send each rate confirmation for your OK.
  4. You haul and get paid. The broker pays you or your factor directly.

FAQ

Box truck dispatch questions

Do I need a CDL to use a box truck dispatch service?

No. Non-CDL box trucks under 26,001 pounds GVWR are welcome, unless you haul placarded hazmat. CDL box trucks are also supported.

What size box truck qualifies?

Box trucks up to 26 feet, CDL and non-CDL.

Do I need an MC number for a non-CDL box truck?

If you haul for hire across state lines, yes. You need operating authority (an MC number), and with a truck rated over 10,000 lbs GVWR, a USDOT number, a DOT medical card and at least $750,000 in liability insurance. A CDL isn't required under 26,001 lbs.

How much can a box truck owner-operator make per week?

There's no honest single number. Your weekly gross is the loads you run times what each one pays. What you keep is that gross minus fuel, insurance, the truck payment and fees. Work out your numbers with our cost per mile guide, and your dispatcher can show you what loads near you are paying before you commit.

Do box truck dispatchers handle Amazon Relay or similar platform freight?

No. We book broker freight only, not Amazon Relay or other platform loads. Broker freight lets your dispatcher negotiate the rate and plan your week.

Do I need cargo insurance even as a non-CDL operator?

Plan on it. Federal rules require liability insurance, and almost every broker also requires cargo insurance before they'll give you a load, CDL or not.

What kind of freight do box trucks typically haul?

Box trucks commonly haul palletized freight, retail distribution loads, and last mile delivery freight, depending on size and region.
