Tennessee Truck Dispatch Along I-40

Tennessee truck dispatch follows I-40 from Memphis through Nashville to Knoxville, in a state that ships out more truck freight than it takes in. We book Tennessee loads remotely for a flat 6% or 8% of weekly gross, with your first 3 days free.

Figures and rules checked October 29, 2026

Tennessee is long and narrow, and I-40 runs its whole length, from Memphis on the Mississippi River through Nashville to Knoxville and the Smoky Mountains. Along the way it crosses I-55, I-65, I-24, I-75 and I-81. That makes Tennessee a crossroads between the Midwest and the Southeast, and a place where trucks from every direction pass through and reload.

It's also one of the few states in the Southeast that ships out more truck freight than it takes in. About 79 million tons left Tennessee by truck for other states in 2022, and about 72 million came in. For owner-operators, outbound loads are usually there to be had.

Memphis International Airport is one of North America's busiest cargo airports in the Airports Council International rankings, thanks to the air freight hub based there. Most of that freight moves by plane, but the warehouses around it create a lot of truck work. Our Memphis truck dispatch page covers the metro in depth.

What Tennessee ships by truck

Leaving out sand, gravel, fuels and logs, the biggest groups of Tennessee truck freight in the FAF6 data were:

  • Nonmetal mineral products: about 23 million tons, from cement to glass to building products.
  • Base metals: about 9.7 million tons, including steel and aluminum.
  • Wood products: about 8.8 million tons from East and Middle Tennessee forests and mills.
  • Mixed freight: about 7.4 million tons from distribution centers.
  • Manufactured goods, food and machinery: about 6 million tons each.

By FAF6 tonnage, the top destinations for Tennessee truck freight include Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama, and the top senders back in are Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi. It's a neighborly market, with most loads crossing one state line.

The I-40 corridor and reloads

Most owner-operators meet Tennessee on I-40. A few things we've learned dispatching it:

  • Memphis reloads in every direction. Its distribution centers ship toward Texas, Chicago, Atlanta and the East, so empty trucks rarely wait long.
  • Nashville is a strong inbound market. The metro's growth pulls in a lot of freight. Outbound is good too, but plan ahead on weekends.
  • East Tennessee feeds the Northeast. I-81 from Knoxville runs straight to Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York, making it a natural lane north.
  • Watch the mountains. I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge toward North Carolina, and I-24 at Monteagle, are steep grades that slow loaded trucks and close in bad weather.

Tennessee through the year

  • Winter: Ice and snow can close I-40 in the mountains east of Knoxville and slow Monteagle on I-24. The rest of the state stays mostly open.
  • Spring: Severe storms and occasional flooding, especially in Middle and West Tennessee. Construction freight picks up.
  • Summer: Auto plant shutdowns can briefly slow parts freight. Produce passing through from the South keeps reefers busy.
  • Fall: The holiday retail peak, which hits the Memphis distribution centers hard from late summer on.

The seasonal freight calendar shows the national pattern behind these swings.

Tennessee rules for owner-operators

  • Fuel tax. Tennessee's diesel rate is 27 cents a gallon on the IFTA matrix for the 4th quarter of 2026, lower than most neighbors. Our IFTA calculator uses it.
  • Intrastate authority. Carriers hauling for hire only inside Tennessee apply for intrastate authority through the Tennessee Department of Revenue's motor carrier section. Interstate carriers run on federal authority.
  • Grades and weather closures. Plan extra time and fuel for Monteagle and the I-40 gorge, and check conditions before you dispatch through them in winter.

A Memphis van loop west, then east over Monteagle

Here's a loop a dispatcher might plan for a dry van based in Memphis, using the city's position on I-40 and I-55.

MondayRetail freight from a Memphis distribution center to Dallas on I-40 and I-30450 miles
TuesdayDallas to Little Rock on I-30320 miles

Each delivery city in this plan reloads well, so the empty miles stay low. The one leg that needs care is Thursday, because Monteagle slows a loaded truck in bad weather.

Tennessee checklist: hours, grades and state lines

  • Check your hours before crossing the state. Memphis to Knoxville is close to a full driving day.
  • Plan fuel and time for Monteagle on I-24 and the I-40 gorge toward North Carolina.
  • On Memphis pickups, confirm whether the load is in Tennessee or across the line in Mississippi or Arkansas.
  • Watch ice forecasts east of Knoxville from December to February.
  • Ask about appointment flexibility at busy Memphis and Nashville distribution centers in the holiday peak.
