Figures and rules checked October 30, 2026

Salt Lake City is the freight crossroads of the Mountain West. I-15 runs north and south through it, connecting Southern California and Las Vegas with Idaho and Montana, and I-80 crosses it east and west between Reno and Wyoming. I-84 branches off toward Boise and Portland. A lot of West Coast freight passes through northern Utah, and a lot of it stops in the warehouses along the Wasatch Front.

Utah takes in slightly more truck freight than it sends out. In 2022, about 37 million tons arrived by truck from other states and about 33 million left. Nevada, California and Idaho were the biggest partners.

The Wasatch Front: where Utah's freight is

Most of Utah's population and freight sits in a narrow strip from Ogden through Salt Lake City to Provo, between the mountains and the Great Salt Lake.

AreaWhat it does
Northwest Salt Lake CityLarge distribution centers near the airport and the rail yards, with access to I-80 and I-215
Ogden and Davis CountyManufacturing, distribution and food along I-15 and I-84
Utah County (Provo, Orem, Lehi)Technology, consumer goods and a fast-growing population
Southern Utah (St. George, Cedar City)I-15 through traffic between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, plus local growth

The biggest van, reefer and flatbed-type freight leaving Utah origins by truck in 2022, from FAF6:

  • Nonmetal mineral products: about 19 million tons
  • Mixed freight from distribution centers: about 7.5 million tons
  • Nonmetallic minerals: about 4 million tons
  • Other foodstuffs: about 3.9 million tons
  • Chemical products: about 3.3 million tons

Lanes and reloads

  • I-15 south to Las Vegas and Southern California is Utah's biggest outbound lane. FAF6 lists Nevada and California as Utah's top truck destinations.
  • I-15 and I-84 north to Idaho and the Northwest carry steady freight both ways.
  • I-80 east to Wyoming and Denver crosses high country that closes in winter storms.
  • I-70 leaves I-15 in central Utah for Colorado, through remote country with few services.
  • Salt Lake City is the reload point. Much of the rest of Utah is far from outbound freight, so plan reloads before delivering outside the Wasatch Front.

Weather and mountains

Utah's mountain routes are short compared with Colorado's, but they can be just as rough in winter. Parleys Canyon on I-80 east of Salt Lake City climbs steeply, and I-80 across Wyoming is known for winter closures from wind and snow. Southern Utah's I-15 through the Virgin River Gorge, near the Arizona line, is a narrow canyon section where crashes can close the road for hours.

Summer brings heat on I-15 and I-80 across the desert, which is hard on tires and reefer units.

An example of how a week can be planned, not a promise of loads, rates or miles. Distances are rounded. A truck running into California must meet CARB rules.

Mountain snow and desert heat

  • Winter: Snow in the canyons and on I-80 in Wyoming. Inversions bring fog along the Wasatch Front.
  • Spring and summer: Construction freight for a growing region.
  • Fall: The holiday build in Salt Lake City distribution centers.

Utah's year swings between canyon snow and desert heat. The seasonal freight calendar covers the freight peaks.

Utah fuel tax and mountain costs

  • Fuel tax. Utah charges 37.9 cents a gallon on diesel on the IFTA matrix for the 4th quarter of 2026. Enter your Utah miles in the IFTA calculator to see the quarter.
  • Long empty miles. Outside the Wasatch Front, deadhead adds up. Compare loads with the rate per mile calculator.

  • Plan the reload in Salt Lake City before delivering elsewhere in Utah.
  • If the next load goes into California, check your CARB status first.
  • Watch for closures in the Virgin River Gorge on I-15 near Arizona.
  • Check tires and reefer units before summer desert runs on I-15 and I-80.

Booking Utah freight with us

Salt Lake City sits where I-15, I-80 and I-84 meet, and your dispatcher uses that junction to point each load toward the next one. Long desert legs are planned with your hours in mind, since services are far apart on I-70 and I-80.
