Kansas Truck Dispatch: Beef Plants, Wichita and Turnpike
Kansas truck dispatch is wheat, cattle and boxed beef from the southwest Kansas packing plants, plus Wichita and Kansas City freight. We book Kansas loads remotely for a flat 6% or 8% of weekly gross, with your first 3 days free.
Figures and rules checked October 30, 2026
Kansas is wheat, cattle and beef, with Kansas City and Wichita as its two freight cities. It's also one of the states that ships more truck freight than it takes in. In 2022, trucks hauled about 54 million tons out of Kansas to other states, and about 47 million came in. Missouri took the most, about 17 million tons, followed by Oklahoma.
For reefer owner-operators, one corner of the state stands out: southwest Kansas, home to some of the largest beef packing plants in the country.
The beef plants of southwest Kansas
Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal form what's often called the Golden Triangle of beef packing. Reporting by DTN in 2026 described the area as home to plants run by several of the country's largest beef processors, with two plants in Dodge City, one in Garden City and Holcomb, and one in Liberal. Feedlots around them supply the cattle.
- Boxed beef ships every day in reefers to grocery distribution centers across the country.
- Plants run on appointments, with strict temperature and sanitation rules. A clean, pre-cooled trailer and an on-time arrival matter.
- Getting there is the catch. Southwest Kansas is far from big cities, so trucks often deadhead in. A dispatcher plans the inbound load so the trip pays both ways.
The FAF6 data shows about 6 million tons of meat leaving Kansas origins by truck in 2022, alongside about 51 million tons of cereal grains, 14.5 million tons of animal feed and 11 million tons of other agricultural products.
Kansas City and Wichita
| Kansas City, Kansas side | Wichita | |
|---|---|---|
| What's there | Large distribution centers and intermodal parks in Johnson and Wyandotte counties, part of the wider Kansas City market | Aircraft manufacturing and parts, distribution and food |
| Main roads | I-35, I-70, I-435 | I-35, I-135, US-54 |
| Reloads | Strong in every direction | Good regional freight, thinner long haul |
Kansas City straddles the state line, so a Kansas delivery there reloads like any Missouri load. Our Missouri page, linked below, covers the Missouri side.
Lanes across Kansas
- I-70 crosses the state from Kansas City through Topeka, Salina and Hays to Colorado. Long, flat and windy.
- I-35 runs from Kansas City through Emporia and Wichita to Oklahoma, much of it on the Kansas Turnpike.
- US-54 and US-400 link Wichita with the southwest Kansas beef country.
- US-83 and US-283 run north and south through the western plains, with long stretches between towns.
The Kansas Turnpike
The Kansas Turnpike carries I-35, I-335 and I-70 between Oklahoma, Wichita, Emporia, Topeka and Kansas City. It's cashless: tolls are paid with a K-TAG or compatible transponder, or billed by plate. Ask brokers whether tolls are covered on Wichita and Kansas City runs.

A Wichita reefer week built on one beef load
One boxed beef load from Dodge City fills most of the week, and the grocery freight back from Chicago brings the truck home.
| Day | Load | About |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Reposition from Wichita to Dodge City | 155 miles empty |
| Tuesday | Boxed beef from Dodge City to a Chicago area grocery warehouse | 830 miles |
| Thursday | Chicago grocery freight to Kansas City on I-55 and I-70 or I-80 and I-35 | 510 miles |
| Friday | Kansas City back to Wichita on the Turnpike | 200 miles |
An example of how a week can be planned, not a promise of loads, rates or miles. Distances are rounded.
Wheat harvest, wind and winter
- Early summer: Wheat harvest, roughly June and July, fills rural roads with grain trucks and custom harvesters.
- Spring: Severe storms and tornadoes. High winds on I-70 can be a hazard for empty trailers.
- Fall: Corn and sorghum harvest, and the holiday build in Kansas City.
- Winter: Blizzards can close I-70 in western Kansas.
Wheat harvest moves north through Kansas each summer. Our seasonal freight calendar shows how it lines up with other harvests.
Kansas fuel tax and Turnpike costs
- Fuel tax. Kansas taxes diesel at 26 cents a gallon on the IFTA matrix for the 4th quarter of 2026, one of the lower rates in the region. The IFTA calculator handles it.
- Deadhead to the plants. Count the empty miles into southwest Kansas with the load profit calculator before you accept a beef load.
Reload points across Kansas
| City or area | Why trucks go there | Reload outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Kansas City, Kansas side | Distribution and intermodal parks | Strong |
| Wichita | Aircraft parts, food and distribution | Good regional freight |
| Dodge City, Garden City and Liberal | Boxed beef | Strong for reefer, but remote |
| Salina | Junction of I-70 and I-135 | Fair |
| Topeka | Food and manufacturing on I-70 | Fair |
Wichita's aircraft freight
Wichita has built airplanes for about a century and still calls itself the Air Capital of the World. Aircraft plants and their suppliers ship parts, sections and tooling. Small parts go in dry vans. Larger pieces may need a flatbed, and the biggest are oversize loads that we don't book. Aircraft parts can be worth a lot, so check that your cargo insurance limit covers the load before you accept it. Our insurance guide explains cargo limits.
