Oklahoma Truck Dispatch: I-35, I-40, I-44 and Turnpikes
Oklahoma truck dispatch runs on three interstates and one big partner: half of Oklahoma's interstate truck freight goes to Texas. We book Oklahoma loads remotely for a flat 6% or 8% of weekly gross, with your first 3 days free.
Figures and rules checked October 30, 2026
Oklahoma is Texas's closest freight partner. In the federal Freight Analysis Framework (FAF6, base year 2022), Oklahoma sent about 20.5 million tons of freight to Texas by truck, half of everything it trucked to other states, and Texas sent about 17 million tons back. For owner-operators, Oklahoma is the bridge between Texas and the Midwest, crossed by I-35, I-40 and I-44.
The state takes in a little more truck freight than it sends out: about 48 million tons arrived from other states in 2022 and about 42 million left. Its own freight is a mix of energy, agriculture and manufacturing.
Three interstates, one crossroads
| Interstate | Route through Oklahoma | What it carries |
|---|---|---|
| I-35 | Texas line through Oklahoma City to Kansas | Freight between Dallas-Fort Worth, Kansas City and the Midwest, including cross-border freight from Laredo |
| I-40 | Texas Panhandle through Oklahoma City to Fort Smith | Cross-country freight between California and the Southeast |
| I-44 | Wichita Falls through Oklahoma City and Tulsa to Missouri | Freight between Texas and St. Louis and Chicago |
Oklahoma City sits where all three meet, and Tulsa is the second hub in the northeast. Both reload well. Western Oklahoma and the Panhandle are thin, with long runs between loads.
What Oklahoma ships
Leaving out fuels, gravel and stone, the biggest Oklahoma truck freight in the FAF6 data for 2022 was:
- Nonmetal mineral products: about 12 million tons.
- Animal feed and cereal grains: about 9.5 and 7.7 million tons, from wheat country and cattle feeding.
- Mixed freight: about 5.7 million tons from distribution centers.
- Fertilizers: about 4 million tons.
- Other foodstuffs and base metals: about 3 and 2.6 million tons.
Oil and gas are Oklahoma's best-known industries, but most of that product moves by pipeline and tanker. For dry freight owner-operators, the energy sector shows up as pipe, equipment and parts on flatbeds and hotshots.
Oklahoma turnpikes
Oklahoma has an extensive turnpike system, including the Turner Turnpike between Oklahoma City and Tulsa and the Will Rogers Turnpike on I-44 toward Missouri. The turnpikes have converted to cashless tolling with PlatePay, which bills by license plate, while trucks with PIKEPASS or a compatible toll tag are charged to their account. Ask brokers whether tolls are covered before routing through them.

An Oklahoma City hotshot week in oil country
An Oklahoma City hotshot can follow oilfield equipment into the Permian Basin and come home on expedited freight from Dallas.
| Day | Load | About |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Oilfield equipment from Oklahoma City to a western Oklahoma site | 150 miles |
| Tuesday | Parts from western Oklahoma to the Permian Basin in Texas | 350 miles |
| Wednesday | Equipment from the Permian Basin to Dallas-Fort Worth on I-20 | 330 miles |
| Thursday | Expedited freight from Dallas to Tulsa | 260 miles |
| Friday | Tulsa back to Oklahoma City on the Turner Turnpike | 105 miles |

Storm season, harvest and oilfield swings
- Spring: Severe storm and tornado season, especially April to June. Watch the weather before routing through central Oklahoma.
- Early summer: Wheat harvest, which fills rural roads in western Oklahoma.
- Winter: Ice storms can shut I-35, I-40 and I-44 for a day or more.
- Any time: Oilfield demand for hotshots and flatbeds rises and falls with drilling activity.
Spring storms and oil prices move Oklahoma freight more than the calendar does. The seasonal freight calendar covers the national cycle.
Oklahoma fuel tax and turnpike costs
- Fuel tax. Oklahoma diesel tax is 19 cents a gallon on the IFTA matrix for the 4th quarter of 2026, the lowest regular rate in the lower 48 (only Ohio's temporary tax holiday is lower). The IFTA calculator shows what that saves.
- Tolls. Turnpike tolls add up on Oklahoma City to Tulsa runs. Count them in the rate.
- CDL check for hotshots. Many oilfield hotshot rigs are heavy. Check your class with the CDL calculator.
Oklahoma reload points
| City or area | Why trucks go there | Reload outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Oklahoma City | Distribution and energy at the I-35, I-40 and I-44 junction | Strong |
| Tulsa | Manufacturing, distribution and energy equipment | Strong |
| Lawton | Military and regional freight on I-44 | Fair |
| Enid | Wheat country and grain | Seasonal |
| Ardmore | I-35 corridor toward Dallas | Fair, often a pass-through |
| The Panhandle | Cattle feeding and grain | Thin, plan ahead |
Energy freight rises and falls
Oilfield freight follows drilling. When oil prices are strong and more rigs are working, western Oklahoma hotshot loads pick up. When drilling slows, those loads thin out fast. The weekly Baker Hughes rig count is a simple way to see where things are heading. Your dispatcher mixes in construction and farm freight so a slow oilfield doesn't mean a slow week.
Oklahoma checklist: turnpikes, oilfield sites and storms
- Check whether the route uses turnpikes and whether tolls are covered.
- On oilfield hotshot loads, confirm the site location, access and any safety gear rules.
- Watch severe weather forecasts in spring before routing through central Oklahoma.
- Plan the reload before delivering in western Oklahoma or the Panhandle.
- Check your CDL class for heavy hotshot rigs before booking oilfield freight.
